I am all for flyering, but some church has stapled flyers to trees in Main South and Piedmont. I don't know anyone at that church, but this really leaves me with the impression that they are jerks.
I thought if some band plastered a flyer on a pole, the venue got the fine for every instance....I am sorry for not being sure, and that could be total b.s., but it almost wouldn't surprise me.
I'm out getting my abs airbrushed on...leave a message
I started doing it for last months show, you know, because screw it.
I was hanging one up on Green St and some old dude came out of the Tara Pub and was just staring at me. After he gawked for about 4 or 5 minutes I gave him a smile and a wave at which point he wagged his finger back and forth as to say I was doing something wrong.
Maybe I was. Stupid law though that in several years seems to have already become a blue law.
I too like flyers on poles. I like how there are some wooden poles on Thayer Street in Providence that from about one foot up to 8 feet up are all metal from staple after staple being inserted into it.
when I was playing out, I had planned on making up a bulletin and handing it to one of the many pan handlers at Exit 13 telling him I'd be back in two hours with 20 bucks if he held it for me.
From what I hear the club gets a significant fine for flyers that go up promoting a show in their club, so it probably wouldn't be wise to do so, regardless of how you feel about it.
Is there really no better way of promoting a show? It seems like some kind of direct marketing scheme is going to be better for getting the word out to people that would actually go, no?
Honestly, what do I know, just thinking out loud.
Also who is gonna clean up the litter? Will that become a problem?
I also have heard that the club gets fined if the flyer is promoting a show in their club.
I have noticed a significant increase though in flyering around my neighborhood (Highland, Institute Rd., etc.). Over the past year I have seen them all over the place....mainly for bands like Guns of Navarone and other bands I have never heard of. And I love it. That law is ridiculous.
If the city is going to be such hardasses about flyers, there should be MULTIPLE locations all over the main foottraffic areas to showcase flyers...a local "what's going on" stop, put it behind plexiglass like the Lucky Dog marquee, and have a lockable drop box beside it with a slot that artists / organizations can drop their info into, and have a person appointed to handle the promotions postings in the spaces, and make sure they are rotated in a timely manner so that everything is showcased according to the applicable dates. I dunno...just thinking aloud...
If that sounds looney and far fetched and unreasonable (which it does), think about the stupid law again.
So, Hanging flyers is something that I have been doing every almost week in Worcester for the past four years. I have definately noticed the flyers coming down alot quicker than in the past.
I love flyers, I love them all. I think they make a city look "happening' or "alive" and there is actually things going on here.
One thing I noticed that may be changing is the handbill effectiveness. In the past people would easily take them, but then throw them on the ground. I have noticed more people showing a great interest in handbills. Not sure why. They used to do nothing for me.
Also lately while passing handbills, I have foundmyself in the middle of downtown Worcester sparking coversations with the most diverse of people that have no idea what is going on. I heard. "Wow, I didnt even know they did music there..(Ralphs)" I mean really... I also heard, I thought that place was turned into a restaurant (Tammany)"??? i also hear " Oh yeah I am going to that show, I already heard all about it." That is always nice..
It really surprises me that people that live in or just work in downtown really don't seam to have a handle of much of the local music/art scene etc... This has been my experience, is this true?
Being originally from Lowell, which operates like a small town, the music scene is very well known to everyone. I think I forget how big worcester is sometimes and that people dont know alot of what's going on.
I am glad that this site exists and that Duncan is planning things like the mixer again. It all helps.
Ok, so half of this post isnt even about flyers but...
A painter paints pictures on canvas. But musicians paint their pictures on silence.

yeah I think that is crazy
yeah I think that is crazy too, but I don't find street light polls covered in posts about things going on in the city unattractive or abnormal.
Sometimes I feel that Worcester just doesn't want to be a city and would prefer the role of suburb.
Does anyone know where the law currently stands? It was a Jordan Levy thing wasn't it?

Re: Flyers on Polls
Funny, because on my street the city decided it was okay to staple a street sweeping warning sign on one of my neighbor's trees.

Re: Flyers on Polls
What would be silly would be looking at how other cities do things. Oh, I forget, in Worcester we don't care about how other cities do things.
Re: Flyers on Polls
they should make the lawmakers take IQ tests.
"what?"
