Flat Duo Jets

Where the fuck have I been? Tony Gayton (of "Athens GA, Inside Out" fame) has put out a documentary of the Flat Duo Jets called "Two Headed Cow".

More than any other 80's band (the Minutemen, the Replacements or R.E.M. included), this Chapel Hill duo were my favorite. Total raw energy. If you never saw them, you really missed a special experience because I don't know anyone who channeled Link Wray, The Sex Pistols, Ray Charles and Satan all in one experience. They were pretty indescribable, but always with a strong backbeat of 50's rockabilly on 10,000 cups of coffee. Absolutely one of the loudest bands I have ever seen but they sounded great and I have yet to see another drummer who hit the skins as loud as Crow.

Dexter Romweber now plays in the Dexter Romweber Duo with his sister Sara who used to be in Let's Active.

You just reminded me that we should have "Athens: Inside Out" night at Duncan's house and watch that documentary and drink sun-brewed Iced Tea.

I am all over that. It's been years since I watched it but I did buy the DVD release.

REM's version of All I Have To Do Is Dream is one of my favorite things.

Re: Flat Duo Jets

These are the 2 Flat Duo Jets songs that were on the "Athens, GA Inside Out" soundtrack. "Jet Tone Boogie" STILL makes the hairs on my neck stand up as much as it did when it knocked me outta my seat in early '87 at the Pleasant Street Theater in NoHo.

"Crazy Hazy Kisses"
"Jet Tone Boogie"

Dex, 1987. Athens, GA before my camera crapped out.

Re: Flat Duo Jets

where does REM's reference of a Two Headed Cow in Pilgrimage come from? Is there any relation to Flat Duo Jets?

Re: Flat Duo Jets

Doubt it as "Pilgrimage" came out in 1983 (HOLY FUCK WAS IT REALLY THAT LONG AGO????) and I don't think the Flat Duo Jets were formed until 1985.

According to something I read on one of the websites, there is an extra on the "Athens, GA Inside Out" DVD from the Flat Duo Jets movie that never was finished where they reference a two headed cow or what-not.

So are FDJ referencing REM?

Re: Flat Duo Jets

I don't think so. If I remember from the film, there is a point where they go to a truck stop or someother and there is either a two headed cow there or a reference to one.

Total coincidence.

Re: Flat Duo Jets

Holy Fuck! Flat Duo Jets! I searched furiously in my basement (CD overflow area) for Go Go Harlem Baby all afternoon and am about to slip it in. Athens, GA Inside Out? Only saw once years ago and loved it.
Thanks Louie for reminding me of all that great music!

Re: Flat Duo Jets

They were certainly one of those bands that you had to see live because their studio albums NEVER captured what they did on stage. The one that got closest was "Safari" on Norton Records.
