Re: early kinks

dude, great idea (about early Kinks).

I dont get the name though. Are you sure your not mispelling it? Nothing would be more punk rock than to be in a band called "The Queefs". :-}~

is this a cover band? kinks tribute? both? neither?

Re: early kinks

Because when you need someone that can hack through sloppy Dave Davies guitar solos, I'm the guy you want.

It's what I do.

It's a boy Mrs. Walker, it's a boy...

Re: early kinks

right now it's deep early kinks tracks with some zombies thrown in and a few originals.

john d's tone on his lp through an ac-30? yes please!

the hollow body harmony bass sounds sweet as well.

In celebration, here's my favorite album.

Play lots from this one!
;D

Re: early kinks

hey mattma-

if you dig this era kinks i think you'll like the selection. without revealing the set list, we only do one off something else proper, but a bunch of b-sides from that lot.

we're also working on a dave number that i consider tied for rarest kinks track (tied with 'mick avory's underpants').

and i'm shaping up a john d penned kinksian original that i'm falling in lurve with...

MattMa's picture

Re: early kinks

B-sides are definitely my cup of "Afternoon Tea."

hmm a rare dave track eh?...so many delicious possibilities. I can't wait to hear it!

Re: early kinks

besides LOLA, the first Kinks song I really liked was COME DANCING.

..when that song first came out, it sounded like nothing else on the radio at the time.

MattMa's picture

Re: early kinks

"Come Dancing" is a fantastic song. I love Ray's observations of how places, people and things change. He's very poetic, artful and humorous about it.

Another song from that period I love is "Do It Again." It starts with the Hard Day's Night chord. Awesome guitar solo from Dave on that one.

Re: early kinks

many folks slag the arista years but those records have a certain charm and include a handful of nuggets. 'better days' in particular rates with the kinks' best stuff.

sir raymond douglas graces the cover of this month's magnet magazine. excellent interview by yo la tengo's ira kaplan, who's band backed ray in 2000.

Do It Again is a great great great song.

Re: early kinks

Just a sidenote...

why was Dave's fourth single "Hold My Hand" not released on any reissue? But the B-side "Creeping Jean" was.

Where can I find it?

preachahroe's picture

Re: early kinks

perhaps i misspoke re: dave's 'rarest'. 'creeping jean' is what i was referencing. few know that one, kudos to you.

MattMa's picture

Re: early kinks

darn didn't mean to give it away...

great song though!

Re: early kinks

Re: early kinks

In the early 90’s I hooked up with a collector in the Netherlands who would send me some cool unreleased Kinks stuff. Most of it was live music from the 70’s and 80’s but every once in a while he would slip in some early, unreleased demos that would just blow my mind. When I had a bunch saved up, I decided to use the songs I had and the legitimate CD’s to come up with a compilation of early Kinks demos. Here is that disc:

"I Believed You (’63)"
"Revenge (’63)"
"I’m A Hog For You (’63)"
"Ooba Diooba (’63)"
"I Don’t Need You Anymore (’64)"
"Too Much Monkey Business (’64)"
"Got Love If You Want It (’64)"
"Don’t Ever Let Me Go (’64)"
"When I See That Girl of Mine (’65)"
"Time Will Tell (’65)"
"I Go To Sleep (’65)"
"A Little Bit of Sunlight (’65)"
"This Strange Effect (’65)"
"Tell Me Now, So I’ll Know (’65)"
"Hide And Seek (’65)"
"She’s My Girl (’65)"
"Listen To Me (’65)"
"Tell Me Now, So I’ll Know (Group demo – ’65)"
"There’s A New World Opening For Me (’65)"
"And I Will Love You (’65)"
"This I Know (’65)"
"All Night Stand (’66)"
"Mr. Reporter (’66)"
"Dedicated Follower of Fashion (’66)"
"Sand On My Shoes (’67)"

When Sanctuary Records did their Kinks reissues, here are 2 songs that for some reason NEVER got reissued:

"She’s Got Everything (’66)"
"Hold My Hand (Dave Davies)"

These are from the BBC, recorded 10/29/67 and didn’t make it on the Kinks BBC set:

"Mr. Pleasant"
"Susannah’s Still Alive"
"Sunny Afternoon"
"David Watts"

Re: early kinks

lordy lordy!

that is amazing. thanks for those tracks!!! The 1966 version of Mr. Reporter is fantastic. I love those odd sound harmonies on "And I Will Love You." The pre-Monica.

i love the quote in the 3-CD retrospective of the Village Green about why She's Got Everything wasn't released on it.

"She's Got Everything, the b-side of Days, was recorded (in February 1966) two years before it was released, well before work began on Village Green and so has been omitted."

Right...

Vocals were supposedly overdubbed in 1968...oh well. All the more reason to keep the Kink Kronikles around I guess.

Those reissue all have spotty things about them like releasing the 1969 version of Mr Reporter on Face to Face instead of the 1966 one. And they still haven't released Dave's cancelled solo album yet, that Sanctuary said they going to do.

how do you guys like the new player I have on the site? You can listen to everything in the playlist all at once and some other nice features.

That is pretty awesome. Did it come in a picture sleeve?

Waterloo Sunset has some of the best arranged harmonies on a pop record. Those La La La's, gives me chills. The Ooo's sound like crystal clear water.

preachahroe's picture

Re: early kinks

unfortunately i didn't get the picture sleeve.

those la's are certainly sublime. how bout the la's on death of a clown? provided by ray's wife rasa i believe.

THIS SHIT IS FRIDAY FOLKS!!!

john d on rickenbacker 12?

huzzah!
