I figured it was time for me to leverage the power of Worcesterite.
I've been living here for a year and a half and have yet to find a barber who satisfies me. Not that I have been looking all that hard. In fact I am lucky if I get my hair cut once every 3 months. But I have not found a steady barber as of yet. I have nothing against salons, but a barber is easier on my wallet.
As far as doctors go I will say I am lucky enough to have not needed one over the past year and a half. But there is nothing wrong with getting a checkup and finding a decent primary care physician.

I suggest Eileen Rafferty, NP. She is an excellent nurse practitioner. As a guy, I find her VERY courteous, thorough and kind. I find NP's to be able to spend more time with you and answer your questions than a MD. She works through UMass at the Hahnemann campus. I have been seeing her for nearly 12 years.
PS - I don't get my hair cut... catholic school "bowl cuts" did it to me.

Hair: Patti at (the questionably named) Kustom Kuts, near the West Boylston line. Been going there for about 20 years, and she cuts my wife's hair now, too.
Doctor: Wilfrid Pitts, at 10 Winthrop St. The whole building is in dire need of modernization, but Dr. Pitts is probably the most thorough, honest doctor I know. I doubt he even lets drug reps in the door. When other doctors in the building go on vacation, Dr. Pitts is their emergency alternate. I've been in Healthcare IT for like 8 years, and I've met a LOT of doctors.
Re: Doctors and Barbers.... Worcesterite Recommends...
what type of barber are you looking for? you looking for a talkitive one, silent one, political debate, one that tells you what's going on in this city, one that talks sports with you? you looking for one who knows the newer styles and listens to you or are you looking for one that sits you down and trims off of whatever you had for your last haircut. (all, mind you, using the electric razor!!!). you looking for a shave job too? old skool? new skool? you looking for a fade or your friends baseball # in the back of your head? dude, there's so much and different kinds out there, but when you do find one, you'll stay w/ him till the day you or he dies.
I could name 1,000 of different barbers in worcester, all different styles. you tell me what you like and I'll tell you who to go to, satisfaction guaranteed!! :-)
as for PCP, I hate mine and am open to recomendations myself.
Re: Doctors and Barbers.... Worcesterite Recommends...
Right near you there are three pretty good barbers. Right in Webster Sq next to the Mobil there is a guy that cuts hair in there who calls himself "Mr Barber" or some such shit. Oh, Dr. Flat Top is his name I think. He only works out of that Barber Shop a few nights a week but he is pretty awesome and really into cutting hair. I mean REALLY into cutting hair. It's like it's his passion. I have never seen anything like it. He does do other hair cuts besides flat tops.
Further west through Webster Sq going out Stafford, almost at the corner of Stafford and James there is a place that I have always just referred to as "the manly barber shop" (I think it's actually called John's). Two guys that talk exclusively about sports, women, hunting and fishing. You know, dude stuff. Pretty awesome.
The best haircut I have had though is by the ladies at the barber shop on Park Ave kind of across from Bender's near the fire station. The name of the barber shop escapes me (Kay's?) but they do a really good job.
Lately I've been going to the two old old old men on North Main near the court house. They are pretty good too.
Re: Doctors and Barbers.... Worcesterite Recommends...
I've gone to Webster Square Barbers shop next to Mobil a few times. The old timer Ernie cut my hair a couple times and some other guy did it once. I was neither overly impress or underwhelmed by their work. It has been just so-so.
I should probably go and check out John's. When we first moved to Worcester we lived on Ludlow St. and one of those two barbers actually lived above us on the 3rd floor. I didn't want to have him cut my hair while we were neighbors in case I didn't like his work and didn't want to go back..... But now that neither of us live there I should go and have him take the scissors to me and catch up. And I can see why you call that "the manly barber shop" because those guys would hang out in the yard what seemed to be 24-7 and pound Bud Lights and such.
And Joe as far as the "type" I am looking for, just a no muss no fuss haircut, take off my couple months growth just a standard haircut. But now that I think of it maybe I do want the Celtics leprechaun shaved into the back of my head!! HA!! Nothing wrong with a barber that wants to shoot the shit and talk sports or city goings on, but if he just shuts up and gets down to business that is fine too!
I'm happy this thread has inspired so many responses so quickly. I will hold you all responsible for my next haircut and my medical well being!!!
Re: Doctors and Barbers.... Worcesterite Recommends...
Karen Flemming, NP out of Fallon Clinic in Auburn.
I absolutely love her. She talks fast and asks a lot of questions and totally appreciates that I don't do drugs and surgery until it's absolutely necessary. I've been with her for probably close to 10 years, and recommended a lot of people to her.
Hi! :-)
Re: Doctors and Barbers.... Worcesterite Recommends...
I agree with Gabe on Kay's on Park Ave. I was getting my hair cut there for over ten years and they were always great. No need to anymore since I have a beautiful live-in stylist of my very own.
(and if you change you mind on the salon thing...go see Jess at Nicholas Michaels in Northboro...I hear she does good work.)
Buttah lay to the bone, jackin me up.
Re: Doctors and Barbers.... Worcesterite Recommends...
I also recc Kay's. Also Tommy M's on Shrewsbury st.
Re: Doctors and Barbers.... Worcesterite Recommends...
Dana or Bill at dana's Barbershop right next to Arts Diner on West Boylston St. My doc is Wendy Bergman. Great lady. Her husband Moe ran for city council, and in my opinion, I wish he had won.
Re: Doctors and Barbers.... Worcesterite Recommends...
i go to hi-cuts on pleasant.
its across from the corner grille where the old coffee kingdom used to be.
i used to have my friend cut it all the time so i never really went anywhere... i tried this place out for the 1st time like 6 months ago.
