gigi's picture

a couple of months ago there was some chatter about folks going to running and/or swimming seminars - so i'm wondering if any of you ladies are going to be at the danskin triathlon in webster this weekend.
i'll be there - anyone else?

sorry guys, it's girls only....but they always need volunteers

Re: danskin triathlon this sunday

The two ladies that were talking about the swimming seminars will be there, and I will also be there. I'll be the one wishing I was attending these swimming seminars way back when instead of waiting until this week to work on my swim strokes. We're doing the mixed, which wave will you be in?

Re: danskin triathlon this sunday

Fanny's in charge. We did the mixed age group, which means we go after the individual age groups. I believe that way the group of us can all go together. I think at least...

Re: danskin triathlon this sunday

Mixed is mixed age groups. That way me at 33 can compete with a friend over 40 and one under 30 rather than go out at different times.

We did the mixed so that on some level we'd all be racing together and also because I'm a huge f'in baby about swimming and wanted to be at the end of the pack. The Mixed is also grouped with the Relay teams for start time.

Gigi you're a swimmer and in the age groups which means you'll probably be done before I'm even done the swim. So feel free to yell obscenities at me.

Re: danskin triathlon this sunday

how did everyone do on sunday? i woke up at 4am to booming thunder, checked weather.com, saw t'storms all day for webster, and i almost didn't go....

glad i did - the weather cleared up just in time for the start and it was perfect weather - at least for those of us going early!

my goal was to finish in the top half and i finished in the top third...760 out of 2468

i came in 38th/2468 (i'll take it!) in the swim which is pretty good for me but then things fell off precipitously in the bike and run and i was pretty much dead-center of the field in both of those...still, it was a great day and i met lots of cool people - people who inspired me to kick it up a notch for next year and people who showed some incredible determination to finish something that was slightly beyond their reach

great day

how did you all do?

Re: danskin triathlon this sunday

This was my first ever triathlon, and I'm happy with my time. I finished in an hour and fifty minutes, better than I thought(although I had no idea what to expect). For me, I faced my fear of open water and swam the half mile faster than I thought I could. The first two times I biked the up hill mile, I didn't make it, but I did it yesterday, and the people walking their bikes cheered me on. I was inspired by my team, and all the amazing women that were there working so hard. I have 100 personal stories from the day, and I'm so happy I did it. Can't wait for next year!

Re: danskin triathlon this sunday

Nice job Gigi!

I think I did fine for my first time.

Just before the race, my friend who is an iron woman told me, "You only get one first time, enjoy the journey, enjoy the day." So I did. I pretty much talked to everyone on the course so that's pretty fun. On the run there's all these little kids who are handing out water saying, "If you want to get splashed just tell me!" So I pretty much let them all splash me. And I high-fived till my hand hurt. :)

Re: danskin triathlon this sunday

I finished, whoo hoo!

Jeez gigi, that's awesome, got any swimming tips for me?
I definitely want to do it next year, I would acutally really like to do a couple a year but I don't think any of them will compare to this one, and all the camraderie was amazing and I doubt there will be too many races like that around. Cheers to us!

I was inspired by my team

I can say with 100% certaintly that without my team I wouldn't have:
a. signed up for the race
b. started training (just 10 minutes!)
c. continued my training and enjoyed it as much as I did
d. got up on race day at 4 a.m. during downpours and thunder and lightning
e. finished my first triathlon

Thank you ladies!

Re: danskin triathlon this sunday

My sister's also did the race as a relay. On the way into the race they picked up a helmet number that had fallen off the helmet. Gigi any guess to what it was?

511

That's right, my teammates found Gigi's helmet number.

Re: danskin triathlon this sunday

fanny, that is too funny! i didn't notice it was gone until i went to put it on to ride back to my car - i'm so dorky that i left last year's number on my helmet until it fell off this spring.

it's so fabulous that you ladies had such a great training and racing experience - and the danskin is so much fun even outside of the sportin' aspect. i'm super into swim but not so much into tri - but i will always do the danskin tri for all the good times and good vibes and good free shirts!

congratulations to everyone

amd i love to give swim tips...
