This is simply a ploy to get everyone away from the Matchbox 20 thread, which has clearly run its course.
On the plane ride back from Ireland last Saturday, I listened to the entire box set of the Who, 30 Years of Maximum R&B. So let's talk about Pete Townshend. The Who were the first band I really loved, and then later Pete's solo work. Looking back on it now, it really seems like he has everything that you would want in a musical idol: terrific player, interesting and wide-ranging lyricist, can write both a great pop song and experimental stuff, including rock operas. Chinese Eyes has to be one of my favorite all-time albums. He broke new ground, his music is still around, and he's clearly a rock legend.
And yet, for some reason, I just don't find him or The Who as interesting as I once did. Based on the conversations we have around here, I'm guessing others have gone through similar trajectories--you loved him/them once, and maybe still liked him/them, but you've moved on.
Why? What does Jeff Tweedy or Van Morrison or Jerry Garcia or Tom Petty (or whomever you most idolize) have that Pete Townshend doesn't?
Re: New Thread! New Thread!
Jim, can we talk about Ireland instead? How was it? Where did you go? Was it for business or pleasure? Did you enjoy anything in particular? Did the Irish like you?
Hi! :-)
Re: New Thread! New Thread!
Child Molestation charges...just kidding.
I recently caught Amazing Journey: The Story of The Who and I found it to be pretty self congratulatory and dull. It almost seemed liek they were waving from afar screaming "don't forget us!" I not a huge fan of the Who, but respect everything they've done yet I found the Motley Crue Behind The Music more interesting.
Re: New Thread! New Thread!
All the Best Cowboys Have Chinese Eyes is one of my favorite records of all time. That being said, I haven't listened to it in over ten years. I find I'm always looking for new stuff to listen to so my old favorites collect a lot of dust.

"what?"
Re: New Thread! New Thread!
Ditto! "It's a clammy tale!" This has been a personal fave for 20 years. And, like you, Scott, of course it has fallen into the dusty pile of CD's in favor of newer, better stuff, like Matchbox 20 and Maroon Five.
I still love The Who (maybe somewhat out of nostalgia. I was a slavish fan throughout my teen years.) Recently returning to their music, I noticed all sorts of things I had never heard before, especially with Quadrophenia, which is not only a great record and a superior concept to Tommy, but is compositionally and sonically amazing.
Scott, back in the day, when my old band did a string of shows with Childhood, at a benefit at Bowlers, I gave you a Who bootleg from Fillmore East 1968, because it had a cover of them doing "Don't Do It," which you guys also did. The rhythm seems to have inspired "The Real Me."
For me, some of The Who machismo has tired, but I love Pete Townsend. And I especially love the reckless abandon of some of the live stuff, like "Young Man Blues," "Sparks" from Woodstock, and the "Join Together/Roadrunner/My Generation Blues" medley on "The Kids Are Alright." There's all kinds of found music, in the form of noise, etc, and the band is always on the verge of falling apart.
Favorite Pete/Who tunes: Dreaming from the Waist, I Am an Animal, Helpless Dancer, Tattoo, Jools and Jim, Sea Refuses No River, Stardom in Acton, All Lovers Are Deranged, Give Blood, and of course the hits: Who's Next, Who by Numbers. I even love most of Face Dances, which rates pretty low for Who albums.

Hey Matt, I have a vague recollection of you giving me that bootleg but it probably is on the floor of one of the many cars I've abandoned over the years. I've always liked Face Dances especially "Don't Let Go the Coat".
Re: New Thread! New Thread!
Good one! And "Did You Steal My Money."
Re: New Thread! New Thread!
I love the Who, but not like the members of my bands who are obsessive about the band.
I always argue that I think Pete is a better singer than Daultry.
My favorite Pete quote, as told me by on numerous occasions by John Donovan, "Never let the music get in the way of the stage act."
The guy is one hell of a song writer.
I do not know a lot about his solo stuff, though. Maybe Matt and Scott can educate me.
