Re: Blackstone Canal Question

The only way to canoe or kayak the Blackstone is with two cars leaving one at your destination. Due to the drop it is damn near impossible to use just one car and paddle back.

With that said, Crystal and I learned that the hard way last year and had to about our mission shortly after putting in in Northbridge.

Our favorite kayaking place has been the Quinnebaug River Canoe Trail in Sturbridge/Brimfield. A nice long fairly flat water paddle that can be done in both directions in a leisurely 4 hours or so and is about 4 miles each way.'

I've been wanting to hit up a section of the Assabet but have not gotten around to it yet.

Re: Blackstone Canal Question

Two years ago a friend and I put in just below Holy Cross on McKeon Road and kayked into Rhode Island before we ran out of daylight. (His wife drove down to get us and the kayaks.) If you put in at Holy Cross there is a 1/4 mile portage within your first 15 minutes or so. After that, there are many portages, but none of them is so tiring.

Also: Beware of the rapids near Milbury, which tossed us from our kayaks. The week after our trip my friend met another group of kayakers who were tossed in the same stretch, one of whom was hospitalized with hypothermia.

Re: Blackstone Canal Question

There's a nice spot in Grafton.. 140 I think. Used to be a farmstand. You can launch there and head out to Lake Ripple.

Re: Blackstone Canal Question

There's a place in Grafton called Ekblaw landing on 122. People always drop in there...I don't know what body of water it is though.
