Hey,
The Fam and I are headed to Baltimore the weekend of Oct. 5th to catch the Titans womp the Ravens. We'll be there the whole weekend though and I know there are a few on here that make it down there on occassion. Besides local bars and clubs, are there any other sites that you would reccomend to see? (we might take the train down to DC, I guess it's only an hour away). oh, and if you happen to know of any cool skate parks in the areas, that would be cool too.
Thx,
Joe

Re: Baltimore
Okay since I am going to bed soon.
There is all sorts of family type stuff all over the inner harbor which is close to the stadium.
The American Visionary Art Museum and the aquarium are probably my two top picks. You can also take a harbor cruise which is fun. Fort McHenry is amazing and the multimedia presentation about the Star Spangled Banner even made a jaded American like me choke up a little. Aside from the history Fort McHenry really puts you right out in the middle of the harbor and you really get to see how busy of a shipping port Baltimore really is. The traffic of ships coming in and out is pretty nuts and it's crazy to think that it's considered at an all time low.
If you are looking for something with more character and what I would consider the true real Baltimore I would go up 83 north to the Hampden neighborhood and walk around and check out all the cool little shops. The lady should like this too. The Mount Vernon neighborhood is pretty cool too with a lot of history and galleries and such.
Fell's Point is the nightlife destination but it's also pretty cool for just walking around for architecture and shopping. There are also a lot of real awesome little bars with great great food and awesome beer selection. DoDa's, Bertha's, John Stephen's and The Wharf Rat all fall under this category.
If you need any other info let me know, I love that city.
Re: Baltimore
thanks Gabe. That was exactly what I was hoping for.

No problem. Playing Baltimore guide is one of my great pleasures, whether in person or being an e-guide.
Re: Baltimore
After watching the Wire, I'm not going anywhere near Baltimore.
Re: Baltimore
All Westside Keith. All Westside.
Of course with your obvious gangsta profile I would stay away from there too.
It's a great beer town sir. It's a really great beer and food town. Lots of places to have a real good beer and eat real good food.
Honestly though, Wire Baltimore is kind of walled off from the rest of Baltimore, although if you are a little brave and street smart there are some cool places on the Westside like Lexington Market, which is right on the edge of the Westside. I do know one person who was not too keen on Lexington Market.
I wouldn't get too adventurous in the city though without a guide. Stick to downtown and don't go west or south of Camden.

Very much so. Lots of beer not distributed in our neck of the woods, and lots of great bars to drink it at.

Yeah, that's totally me. That place gave me the creeps. I felt like I needed a shower when I left.

Re: Baltimore
By the way, that new avatar I have up is me in Fell's at probably 2:15 in the morning. I am feeling quite pleasant.
Re: Baltimore
Fells is a great place to be feeling pleasant.
What was the name of that crab place we went to?

Last time we were at Fells, it was like little Worcester. The whole bar was from Worcester or Shrewsbury.

They can ship the crabs to you!
Re: Baltimore
As a native of Baltimore, I'd second the Visionary Arts Museum. The Water Taxis are great - I think you can take a Water Taxi to Fort McHenry. It was there that the battle was fought that inspired the Stars Spangled Banner. I always enjoyed going there and I think most young people do,
Also as a native of Baltimore, I will respectfully disagree with calling Hampden "the real Baltimore." While it may have been at one time, it is now a John Waters theme park version of Baltimore. The "real Baltimorians" are mocked by places like Cafe Hon; they probably can't afford to live in Hampden anymore. (Sorry. That's a sore point for me. I'll climb off my soapbox now).

Re: Baltimore
No Gary I hear you. Last time I was in Hampden was August of 2007 and I was talking to one of the owners of the True Vine who was lamenting the gentrification of the neighborhood. At that point it had been a year and four months since I lived there and I couldn't believe what had gone on since so in another years time I am sure it has changed even more. I have to think that it is still a welcome change from the tourism of Fell's and the Inner Harbor though. I also hear you on Cafe Hon, never really my favorite place when I was living there but I have nostalgic memories of the place.
There are still pockets left though I think like Frasier's and Dimitri's, the latter totally being the real deal.
Re: Baltimore
Dimitri's fucking rocks the balls offa my body!
Re: Baltimore
I agree about Frasier's and Dimitri's. Fells Point is not what it once was either. All in all, I'm glad to be here instead of there.
