Armsby Abbey

duncan's picture

The new Armsby Abbey looks great! I stopped in last night to say hello and check out the place on its first night open. The place was packed, the vibe was great and the building looks incredible. Congrats to Alec and the whole gang who is behind making that place happen.

Re: Armsby Abbey

Hey Duncan,
This sounds terrific, maybe a good spot for an upcoming mixer? :) Speaking of which, I've never been, do you usually have a good turn-out and do you switch locations monthly?
Thx,
Stace

duncan's picture

Re: Armsby Abbey

It would be an incredible spot for a mixer for sure. I decided to not move them around the way I had done in the past to avoid confusion and to make it easier on me in terms of promoting them. I felt the ones previously had become less about networking and more about socializing. It's hard to avoid but my hope is that by promoting less, moving them around less and just letting word of mouth do its thing, the mixers will become as useful as I think they can be.

that said, I think moving every few months is doable and The Armsby Abbey is a prime location for them.

For now, Nick's is where they are at, first Monday of every month, 9pm. Nicole and Nick's have been incredible.

Speaking of Nicks and the Armsby. I think it's so damn cool that these two places are open at the same time. What a great looking couple of bars.

Go Worcester!

Re: Armsby Abbey

Looks awesome Alec and Sherry. Can't wait to make my way through as many of the bottles as possible....

(And, I have to concede to Alec...he told me the pizza would be one of the best artisan crafted I've had, if not the best. It's damn good, especially with the fresh basil.)

Re: Armsby Abbey

I heard on the street that they will have a vegan pizza-ish thing. Pure awesome.

I can't believe I missed the opening. I can't believe I missed the announcement that last night would be the opening. I'm so oblivious sometimes. :(

We had a great time Saturday night, and were thrilled to see how busy the place was. I look forward to going back and having some food! Oh, and the mixed drinks rocked . . .I don't drink beer :)

We had a great time Saturday night. The place is a keeper. All previous comments apply. I woiuld like to add that the music system was great. Selections could have been straight off my ipod. Old Trafic, BB King, Muddy W.. Much more that I don't recall. After three Smutty Nose Brown Dog ales...things got a bit fuzzy.

Re: Armsby Abbey

I have a bunch of children who come in the small variety. Is this a place that I could bring the family for lunch?

Or is it better for adults and kids who are not likely to shout out "I have to go poop!" in the middle of lunch?

Re: Armsby Abbey

I have certainly thought about the Abbey since I went there on Saturday night and would like to offer my review.

Walking inside the establishment one gets a feeling I was immediately struck how the place seems empty, like something else was needed. Oh, there were many people there, but the walls were bare, screaming for some artwork. I think the owners should have forgone a soft opening and waited until the decor was a little more finished.

I am not a fan of the "craft beers" but I was impressed with the menu of beers. The coolers behind the bar looked very nice stocked with foreign libations and people seemed to be enjoying what they were drinking. I opted for a something-Cross (can't remember the name) scotch that was very tasty and SERVED IN THE PROPER GLASS. Something that 90% of the bars in Worcester get wrong.

I had problems while sitting at the bar like there were too many chairs and they don't swivel so getting out of my seat was a real hassle because I had to push my chair straight out, instead of sliding off the side, but this could easily be solved by less chairs.

It also took a little asking then hunting to find the bathroom. You have to go out a door that resembles an emergency exit (when I pushed through I was waitng for the alarm) then to a hallway and then the adventure to the toilet. Not a main bitch, but something that begs for better signage.

I did not eat there but the two plates saw come out of the kitchen looked very good. The first was a cheese plate with bread and salami (I think) and a few different kinds of cheese. The second was a small pizza that appeared very different from what we are used to in the Woo. It's a little bigger than a 45 record (remember those?) and the one I saw had tomato slices with basil and cheese. HMMMMMMMMM, can't wait to go back for one of those.

The background music was great, but overall I think the place was a little too noisy and echo-y and I kept having to have people repeat themselves when they were talking to me.

The Armsby Abbey needs some work, but I think that this may be one of the better places in the city to go and have some fine cocktails and beers and get a bite to eat.

Re: Armsby Abbey

I was thrilled that they had a soft opening. I was even more thrilled that I was invited. I liked it so much I went twice. Friday the Boy and I went there, I didn't know it was an invite only thing (I just hadn't picked up my mail yet) but we were welcomed in by Alec with a handshake and a hug.

Despite the throngs of people, despite the fact that he was clearly busy, he made sure we had a place to sit, a righteous cocktail and some food. We had some lovely conversation about all the work that went into the decor - handmade tap system, handcrafted wood for the bar and the shelving, last of the handmade sound systems from a local vendor EAW - and what was yet to come. I had no problem with the absence of art on the walls. I liked feeling like I was in on a secret, that I got to see the place in progress rather than completely buttoned up. But do not be fooled because the wait staff is so well versed in the drinks and the food which is incredibly polished.

I drank a Midsummer Night. It's got gin, but isn't ginny. It made me happy. D and I had 2 pizza's. One of which was described by my date as "Elegant," and elegant it was: orange zest and fresh oregano with a rich cheese drizzled with honey. It was so delicious. We did not finish either pizza because they were too big so took them home in biodegradable to-go containers.

I could go on and on. It's the little touches that mean a lot, the attention to detail, the handcrafted everything, the biodegradable containers, the locally grown ingredients. I think they did a beautiful job.

Re: Armsby Abbey

I really enjoyed Alec's excitement as he told me about the next steps in the decor, his enthusiasm was catching. Although it took me a minute to understand what he meant by Iris curtains, but then I got it :) I can't wait to see how it all progresses.

Re: Armsby Abbey

Ok, so I just want to keep bumping this thread to the top of the page. :)

What's going on with the Abbey web site? I really hope there will be some means of maintaining the beer lists on it. Beer geeks moan about beer beer websites constantly.

duncan's picture

Re: Armsby Abbey

site is in the process, just needs a little attention before it goes live. Beer geeks should calm down ;)

Re: Armsby Abbey

I don't know exactly what they're doing for publicity, but they're hitting certain demographics square on: we had "mystery band" practice yesterday, and it turns out that 3/5 of my band (strangers to each other) have been to the Abbey in its first week.

Re: Armsby Abbey

A bunch of us stopped in after the clothing swap Tuesday night and the place was super busy. Crystal was raving about the chocolate beer, so I had to try it...Delicious. The place looks great, we will be back this weekend (someone save me a window seat).

4rilla's picture

Re: Armsby Abbey

Wait until you try the Southern Tier Creme Brulee Punky.... Oh so good!

And yeah I was stoked that Crystal called me to come on down and join you folks on Tuesday night.

The Abbey was pretty crowded and slightly understaffed for a Tuesday but Alec and co. will sort that all out in due time. I thought the space looked great and will be even better when the finishing touches are all put in place.

Good beer and a faint smell of sawdust, all good in my book.

Alec, if you have not already you should send a menu down to The Hanover Theatre, they have a table in the lobby with menus from local resturants and with your rather close proximity to the Theatre the Abbey should be the top choice for a pre or post Theatre beverage.

Re: Armsby Abbey

I finally got a chance to eat at the Abby last night, and I was honestly very pleased. I am one of those people who thinks that I am the only one who can make a decent salad, and am often let down by the salads I get when eating out, well not last night. I love bitter greens, and the arugula salad with goat cheese and walnuts was fantastic! My sassy date and I decided to split 2 pizzas, we had the special green goddess pie that was covered in fresh basil, with a pesto base . . .yum! The second pizza was adapted, as we removed the meat. It was a blue cheese base, with more bitter greens and pears(I'm guessing on the pears, they don't seem to be on my leftover slices, but I think they were there). Both of these pizzas were fresh, crispy and full of flavor. Next time I want to try the pizza that has a curry base and veggies and the carrot wrap. I tried the Iris cosmo, which was very good but I found my drink of choice, and for the life of me I can't think of the name right now. It is vodka and grapefruit, with another ingredient(Alec, maybe you can let us know what it is called) just lovely, lastly we split a lavender and basil martini, another hit! I think I might not ever drink a glass of wine at the Abby, because the mixed drinks are interesting and awesome. The new beer blackboard has been installed and it looks great, the bar now has a hand forged, iron footrest that makes the bar a comfy place to sit. The crowd was good sized and eclectic, not too noisy, all in all a good vibe and a good time.

Sounds like you had a Greyhound?

Next time I am in there I will see what they can do for a vegan pizza.

Re: Armsby Abbey

Stopped in to the Abbey tonight after dinner at Baba just for a drink and dessert. I will only add my accolades. The place is beautiful, and I had the Mayflower Cask ale which was delicious. We sampled both desserts on the menu, and both were excellent.

Congrats and thanks to the Abbey for supporting both environmentally friendly farming practices and the local economy--and for making it so delicious for patrons to do so as well!

Re: Armsby Abbey

Had a good lunch there yesterday. Both a non-vegan non-beer-drinker and a vegan beer-drinker felt satisfied.

Today a friend mentioned their posted "dress code" which she was kinda worried by. I took a look and it seems tongue-in-cheek to me. I stopped by over the weekend with the Snow Ghost, who was in the discouraged category of Those Who Wear Their Sunglasses At Night, but also in the encouraged category of Rockstars, which I guess got him past the doorman.

gaberollins's picture

Re: Armsby Abbey

It seems that if they doubt you are a rock star you should always be able to gain entrance by simply yelling "DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM?"

Even better would be for whoever is with you to yell "DO YOU KNOW WHO THIS IS?" Which you definitely should have done in the case of the Snow Ghost, who is absolutely a rock star.

My friend was telling me about a blueberry martini she had there that was made with muddled blueberry's.
How fresh is that (pun intended).
I need to try it.

Re: Armsby Abbey

There's some good muddlin' goin' on there. They've got lots of fresh ingredients that they muddle in many of their righteous cocktails.

Re: Armsby Abbey

My wife and I made our first visit last night and we were both very impressed. Cool atmosphere, the staff was great (we sat at the bar) and the food that we had (tomato/mozzarella salad and a pizza) was delicious. I love the approach with the local, seasonal ingredients. I had a lovely Mayflower IPA and Sharon had an Allagash White. Unfortunately, we could only stay for a short bit as we were heading over to Tammany to see my nephew play his first real club gig, but we shall return to sample more of the goodies.

My only complaint is that I couldn't read the menus, which is partially a function of the small type, me forgetting my "little old man reading glasses" and the lighting level. No biggie as Sharon read them to me. After perusing the complete list of selections, Sharon (who is a very tough sell) has now declared it her"new favorite place".

Congratulations to Alec and the staff, and keep up the great work.

Re: Armsby Abbey

Checked out the Abbey yesterday afternoon after spending some sweaty hours dragging furniture up three flights of stairs with Linnea.

The service was great and I was happy that we weren't judged by our stained manual labor clothing (found out later on in the evening that I had torn a huge hole in my ass getting my pocket caught on something while moving stuff). Anyway.

The food was great. I had the vegetable and curry pizza...pretty darn good. I'm a huge fan of cilantro, so that was a neat little addition to the dish.

Love the layout of the space and it smells really new. :p

I'll be back eventually to do some drinking. There's a ton of beer I want to imbibe. Though I think I'll skip the hole-in-the-ass jeans next time.
