Instead of dreading 30 (next May) I'm forcing myself to embrace it, and try to enjoy it. I've decided to compile a list of 30 things to do before I turn 31, but I'm having trouble coming up with the last few. Anyone have any great ideas for things I should try? My list is all over the place, from writing a book to learning to cook, there's physical and mental challenges in there, as well as financial goals and fun stuff.
Suggestions?
Re: 30 things

I'm out getting my abs airbrushed on...leave a message
Re: 30 things
Places you'd like to see in the U.S. - obviously abroad, but that takes money and time. I think it's important to visit places right here in our own country.
Re: 30 things
I'll be going to Playa Del Carmen for my 37th this year. 40 I will be in Greece I'm saving up now!!
Re: 30 things
1. Get my thoughts together to produce the rest of this list.
If you have the time throw everything on the table even if there's 100 things you'd like to do, then pick 5 that you think you'd actually be able to accomplish not necessarily the ones that are your favorites. Do them then pick, 5 more. Like writing a book, a letter and boring audit report...you have to just start writing even if its not what's going to be in the finished product.
Re: 30 things
Take yourself out of your comfort zone somehow. You will either impress the hell out of yourself, or learn something really important
Re: 30 things
Interesting idea.... I'm about 2.5 months away from my own 30th.... gawd! I have no ideas for you, but I'm thinking that I might have to come up with a list of my own.
oh wait! how about a monthly dinner party hosted by you??? (that kind of works better for me but its an idea)
Re: 30 things
Vote. And not just for the socially acceptable/no heavy lifting regulars on the ballot. Look at REAL issues, research the history behind them and then make moral and intellectual decisions that reflect your real values.
Sounds simple, but it's not.
Re: 30 things
I thought 30 was going to be some kind of huge milestone... but it wasn't. The milestones come at completely random times, and you need to enjoy/appreciate them when they appear.
Like, for me... The last 3 months have been a total sea change for my life. But who would've expected it to happen at 34?
So Linnea, just remember that 30 isn't even CLOSE to being the big deal you think it is. Keep an eye out for every day of your life, both before and after your birthday.
I don't think your band is very good.
Re: 30 things
MrPez, you're "inner Oprah" comes out wa-aay too often.
Re: 30 things
Great responses. I really don't want to think of 30 as this huge milestone, but to me personally, I find it a little depressing, and I want to give myself something to look forward to. For my 21st I went skydiving, and it was amazing, and something I always remember. I want another birthday like that.
Re: 30 things
Grow a beard.
Passion is inversely proportional to the amount of real information available.
Re: 30 things
WINNER!!
Re: 30 things
What's on your list so far?
My suggestions:
* ride a bicycle across America
* run a marathon
* watch every movie on the 100 Best movies of all time list
* publish a book
* go the furthest you've ever been from home
* hike up a mountain
"I am the queen of France"
Re: 30 things
GIVE BACK!
Re: 30 things
Join a GYM if u havent already. Even if you dont hwant to lose weight, its a big confidence booster to live a healty lifestyle.
Re: 30 things
That only happens when I'm drunk... which sort of explains the frequency.
Re: 30 things
John those are great ideas, some of them may be even a little too unreachable for me though. Here's my list so far:
1. Run a half-marathon (we'll see how that goes before there's any talk of a full one)
2. Write a book (then we'll see about publishing it)
3. Travel outside of the U.S. (leaving that wide open purely for the sake of financing)
4. Finish my B.S. in Sports Management
5. Start working towards a Masters in Sports Management
6. Become a homeowner (hoping this happens soon)
7. Compete in an Olympic distance triathlon
8. Lose 40 lbs.
9. Pose nude tastefully for art's sake (this comes after number 8, anyone need a nude model)
10. Save an "emergency fund"
11. Get my yoga certification
12. Learn to cook
13. Fall in love (leaving this very wide open)
17 to go!
Re: 30 things
monthly dinner party is in too Kate, but that's not gonna be on the list, we're just waiting for a closing date for that one!
Re: 30 things
RE #8:
I just lost 35 pounds. I go semi-regularly to the gym (2-5 times a week, depending on my energy levels and yoga is the best thing ever, btw). The main thing that really worked? thedailyplate.com and another similar calorie counter, fitday.com, but TDP is so much easier to use and it lets you put in meals and recipes and then modify them easily. It's not a diet; those don't work. You have to change your lifestyle and the easiest way to do that is to examine what you're eating and go from there. TDP simply lets you easily track what you eat and you make the decisions from there. There are also forums for recipe/fitness ideas, etc. It's even free!
Re: 30 things
I've lost almost the same! I am busting my ass at the gym though. Thanks for posting those links, I LOVE fit day.
Re: 30 things
20lbs down for me since January! only 1.4lbs til goal! )
Re: 30 things
I really dread calorie counting, but unfortunately I think that may be the only way to go for at least a little while. Exercise is no problem at all, but maybe I will start doing more yoga because that really does seem to help with a lot of things once you are practicing regularly, I wish I could afford to go to Bikram regularly. I have played around on fitday and the daily plate a bunch, I love that I can put in like two hours of exercise and eat a few hundred extra calories, but maybe I shouldn't allow myself to do that!
Re: 30 things
Alot of people make that mistake when they start working out. A "couple of hours" is also over doing it a bit. The only real benefit of marathon cardio is to increase your endurance, as in, you are planning on running amarathon, or taking a monumental hike.
I can squeeze in a total body workout in 50 minutes. 30 cardio, 20 muscle training. I will add another 30 minutes of cardio once a week, for a boost.
Re: 30 things
Linnea, my addition to your list would be to listen to Pez. And on the day before your 31st birthday, look fondly at what you've done in the past year without regret.
Hi! :-)
Re: 30 things
Linnea are we on tomorrow? Email me!
Re: 30 things
I'm a personal trainer and group exercise instructor so I usually end up doing about 1-2 hours of exercise a day, depending on whether I do my own workout or just teach classes, I really have no choice on that. I'd be more than willing to trade some fitness training if there are any nutritional experts on here! If I'm going to lose 40 lbs the only way it's gonna happen is by making the right eating choices.
I think one of the main reasons I'm dreading 30 is that despite the fact that I am very laid back I always have my own list of personal accomplishments that should be done by such and such a time. It's not like I grow up and think, crap I need to be married by the age of 25 or I'll be a total failure, more like I think hey Linnea, you really should continue learning, and even though you have a degree, if you're really serious about your chosen career path you should really get a degree in that field. So then I have to do it. Like when Fanny and Tina said oh btw we're doing the Danskin triathlon in July and I thought, hey I should do that too, and then I have to do it.
Maybe my next goal should be to learn to not expect so much of myself.
